The details
This castle, built in the troubadour style, has been thoughtfully and stylishly restored. The original wooden floors and high stuccoed ceilings combined with modern eclectic furniture and a minimalist design creates a wonderful blend of old meets new in these five spacious and beautiful guest rooms.
The Suite Du Fils on the mezzanine floor has a stunning blue living room with elegant lounge furniture from the 1960's and a fabulous modern floor lamp, a double bedroom with an eye catching turquoise fireplace, a spacious wardrobe and bathroom with shower. The living room also contains a sofa bed if needed for a third person. These rooms benefit from wonderful light in the morning and late afternoon.
The Suite De Madame is an immediately calming space with pale grey/green wallpaper, a lovely white fireplace and plenty of room to relax. The golden mirror adds a touch of opulence and the restored upholstered chairs beg for you to lounge away an afternoon. There is also a lovely double room with a fabulous view of the park. The bathroom is a bit of a treat with a six metre high canopy ceiling, held by four stone heads which arch over the bathtub where you can lay back and relax in style.
The Chambre De Monsieur, also very spacious, has light grey wallpaper and beautiful wooden paneling which emphasises the proportions of the room. A double room with a built in wardrobe, this room also provides a fantastic view of the park and its fireplace with gold and shell mirror is a great spot to take advantage of the comfy reading chair. It has a large bathroom, stylishly lined with Art Nouveau tiles, and a freestanding bathtub to soak in whilst overlooking the park.
The Salle D'armes is entered through a glass door and its huge double window offers another gorgeous view of the park whilst flooding this space with light.
Decorated in muted colours with pops of fabulous burnt orange, this double room has elegance and comfort combined. There's a marble fireplace and an old mirror opposite the bed and this room has its own separate wardrobe housed in a tower boudoir! The piece de resistance is the circular bathroom with stained glass windows at the end of a corridor lined with original floral tiles.
Last but by no means least is the Chambre D'Armoires, a cosy double room who's main feature is a beautiful wooden wall unit which contains two walk in closets and a separate toilet and bathroom with shower. There's a picture perfect view of the flower garden which you can enjoy from the window seat and the wallpaper in this room, with its white and blue motif, dates back to the 18th century. There's comfy dark blue chairs to laze about in and the general air is one of relaxed opulence.
Whichever room you choose to stay in, the castle is without a doubt one of the most lovingly restored buildings you could hope for and its brilliant mix of old and new will have you snapping pics at every turn.
There's plenty to do in the area and the owners are happy to advise on any excursion you might like to make. Visit the nearby Medieval town of Mirepoix and explore the Place des Couverts, a lovely covered market with plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy between browsing the stalls. Pop in to the historic Mirepoix Cathedral, founded in the 11th century, it has the largest apses in France! And for local restaurants in Lagarde why not try Restaurant Le Grain de Sel, and L'autre Jardin?
