The details
This traditional Portuguese windmill sits in splendid isolation amid pine and eucalyptus trees, just 10 minutes from the fabulous big wave surfing beaches of Nazare. Climb up into the woodlands behind Portugal's rugged Silver Coast and you'll find the Forest Windmill, perched on a hill with views over the treetops. There isn't another house in sight. The peace and privacy feel like you're miles from anywhere, even though the nearest town is only a short walk away. Inside, this 19th century windmill had been given a simple yet chic renovation. Sleeping up to four guests over three floors, the windmill's thick stone walls keep you cool in the heat and cosy in the winter months. On the ground floor is the kitchen and dining area. Here you'll find all you need to put together everything from a dinner of delicious local produce, to your first coffee of the day in the Nespresso machine. The dining table in front of the stove makes the perfect place for a snug evening meal, but on warm days you'll probably want to eat outside in the sunshine. There's a BBQ and sun-trap outdoor seating where you can relax with a glass of vinho verde and listen to the wind in the trees. When bedtime beckons, head upstairs to the windmill's two bedrooms. On the first floor is a comfortable day bed which can sleep two as twin beds or a double, plus the stylish Scandinavian inspired bathroom. Climb the spiral stairs to the top floor and the master bedroom, where the mill's wooden roof arches above you, and the windows open out onto miles of rural views. Beach days here are a must. A short stroll down the forest trail takes you to the wild and beautiful sandy beaches of Portugal's Atlantic coast, famous for their big wave surfing. The little beach town of Nazare is also within easy reach, where you'll find shops to potter in and some fantastic local seafood restaurants.
