The details
Le Mas is one of those places that instantly makes you exhale. A beautifully restored Dordogne farmhouse where thick stone walls, vast fireplaces and exposed beams meet calm, contemporary luxury. Renovated with the help of an interior designer, the house honours its historic soul while delivering discreet, five-star comfort. The accolades speak for themselves too, from a five-star Ministry of Tourism rating to glowing national press praise. At the heart of the house is the impressive kitchen, a generous, character-filled space with terracotta floors, a monumental stone fireplace and a long table made for lingering meals. It’s superbly equipped for keen cooks, while doors and staircases lead off to the rest of the house, making it a natural hub for gathering together. The adjoining sitting room is equally inviting, with huge sofas, a wood burner and doors opening straight out to the pool and summer kitchen. Outside, life revolves around the private heated swimming pool, open from April to October and positioned to soak up the views. The saltwater pool is gentler on skin and eyes, and is surrounded by a spacious terrace dotted with loungers and parasols. Just opposite sits the glorious covered summer kitchen, once a barn, now a shaded, open-sided space with dining and a large Weber gas barbecue. As day turns to night, atmospheric lighting transforms it into a magical spot for dinners, games and late-night conversations. Le Mas sleeps up to 12 guests across five beautifully finished bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. Upstairs are three king size doubles with air conditioning, wooden floors, exposed beams and views over fields, woods and the pool. Two of these have indulgent bathrooms with freestanding baths and walk-in showers. On the ground floor are two twin bedrooms, one of which can be made into a king size double, both with ensuite showers. One ground floor bedroom is wheelchair accessible. The gardens are a joy to explore, with fruit and nut trees, scented planting, hidden benches and converted outbuildings housing a covered pétanque court and table tennis area. The setting places you right in the heart of what makes the Dordogne so special. Within a short drive you’ll find some of France’s most beautiful bastide towns, including Monpazier, Beaumont du Périgord and Issigeac, each with lively weekly markets where stalls overflow with local produce, antiques and regional delicacies. History lovers are spoilt for choice, with countless châteaux scattered across the landscape, from dramatic hilltop fortresses like Beynac and Castelnaud to elegant estates such as Biron and Milandes, once home to Josephine Baker. The Dordogne and Vézère rivers invite long, lazy days canoeing past limestone cliffs, medieval villages and riverside beaches, while walkers and cyclists can head straight out onto woodland trails and country lanes from the doorstep. Food and wine are an essential part of life here too, with truffle hunting in season, vineyard tours around Bergerac and Saint-Émilion, and unforgettable meals enjoyed at local restaurants or back at Le Mas under the stars. Whether your days are filled with exploring, eating, swimming or simply soaking up the views, this is a region that rewards slowing down and savouring every moment.
