The details

Tucked deep into a peaceful Mid Wales valley, Mill House is a remarkable 260-year-old grain mill reimagined into a warm, inviting retreat where heritage and contemporary design come together beautifully. This is a place that instantly slows your pace: oak beams, stone walls and original mill cogs tell the story of its past, while bespoke interiors, handcrafted details and wraparound meadow views make it a memorable setting for group stays, creative retreats and unforgettable celebrations.

Step inside and the character of the old mill takes centre stage. The stone hallway leads to a welcoming oak boot room, ready for muddy boots after woodland strolls, and a quirky cloakroom filled with vintage mirrors and bold wallpaper. At the heart of the house lies the handmade kitchen, a true showpiece admired by every guest. Designed for cooking, gathering and lingering, it flows gracefully into the light-filled dining area with its 10-seater table overlooking the grounds. Two cosy living spaces share a double-sided wood-burning stove, creating a warm hub for evenings with wine, stories and soft lamplight. The first basket of logs is provided, with further supplies available if needed.

Five calming king size ensuite bedrooms are spread over two floors, each with its own personality and its own story. Think soothing green tones in Sage, gentle blues in Wren and bright yellow walls in the joyful Rosalind, all paired with beautifully tiled bathrooms. Agnes, perched at the gable end, offers serene writing-spot views over the herb garden, meadows and river beyond. Down at garden level, Moss is restful and cool, its wall markings showing where the mill’s great wheel once stood. Every bedroom feels like a private sanctuary, designed for slow starts and peaceful nights.

Outside, the sense of tranquillity deepens. Wander to the orchard arbour for relaxed alfresco meals or gather around the fire pit as the stars appear over the valley. The handcrafted Heartwood Sauna (adults only) offers floor-to-ceiling nature views, with an outdoor shower and river steps completing the spa-like experience. Explore ten acres of meadows and woodland, follow private footpaths through the conservation area or simply settle into the rhythm of the river where otters, voles and trout can often be spotted.

Just a covered walkway away, Piggeries is your exclusive rustic gathering space. Once home to farm animals, it has been transformed into a charming brick and timber building with a wood-burning stove, bar, large dining table and dedicated treatment room. Whether hosting a celebratory feast or unwinding with a massage, it’s made for togetherness and restoration.

Beyond the estate, rural Mid Wales unfolds in every direction. Wander riverside trails straight from the door, explore the rolling hills or drive to the shores of Llyn Clywedog for picnics and wildlife watching. With the market towns of Llanidloes and Machynlleth close by, culture, food and history are easy to reach before returning to the peaceful embrace of Mill House.
