The details

This marvellous home sits in a Scottish Highland wood overlooking the scenic shores of Loch Shieldaig. Ideal for a couple’s romantic retreat or a family break with one child, Rhuroin offers a lovely combination of calming wooden tones and simple minimalist design.

When you arrive, this striking home sits amidst mature Scots pine, rowan and birch trees overlooking a sheltered bay. This beautiful setting encourages you to calm down and unwind whilst taking in your surroundings in peace.

Stepping inside, the home has a lovely open plan ground floor, where the kitchen, dining area and lounge are all connected. The wood-burning fireplace sits in a striking stone wall and ensures you stay toasty and warm whatever the weather. Put your feet up and warm your toes as you enjoy a glass of wine with your loved one or tuck into a good book. The sitting room can be closed off from the rest of this space by bifolding doors.

The kitchen is nicely equipped with modern appliances and there’s a round dining table that sets the scene for family dinners and romantic suppers. There’s also an outdoor dining table where you can enjoy an alfresco lunch in the summer sunshine whilst gazing out at the incredible views.

When night falls, the double bedroom is located on the first floor, offering stunning views to the northwest and east. This level also includes a second bedroom with two children's beds, a bathroom and a landing featuring a floor-to-ceiling window with breathtaking views.

Tucked away on the wild Applecross Peninsula, just 2.5 miles from Shieldaig, Rhuroin offers off-grid luxury with front-row seats to nature. Watch sea eagles soar overhead, otters and seals play in the loch and dolphins feed in the bay - binoculars provided.

With direct water access for wild swimming and kayaking, plus epic hill and coastal walks nearby, it's perfect for adventurers. Explore with local guides, paddle from the Kayak Shack or fish and stalk on nearby estates. Life here is peaceful, remote and deeply connected to the rhythms of the Highlands, yet you’re only 70 miles from Inverness Airport.

My partner and I booked Rhuroin for our honeymoon and had an absolutely wonderful time surrounded by the beautiful highlands. It was the perfectly peaceful and relaxing break needed following all our wedding planning. The kitchen was very well furnished with all the equipment we could need for self-catering and the wood burner gave the cottage a wonderful warmth.

We were so fortunate to find Rhuroin last minute when other plans fell through! What a place! The house is delightful and the location just perfect - views out of the windows constantly changing with the light and the weather. Deer appeared in the back garden while we were doing the dishes. We didn't see any pine martens, but I think the chickens were happy about that. We especially appreciated how well-equipped the house is, including some kitchen essentials we hadn’t thought to bring which allowed us to make pancakes (we didn’t quite get round to baking bread …) It is very clear that a lot of thought and effort has been put into the house. We wanted for nothing. We enjoyed swimming in the loch at the bottom of the slope, going out on our paddleboard and saying hello to the seals on the nearby island. Driving over the Bealach na Ba to Applecross and looking across to Skye and Raasay was a highlight of the trip, and we had some great low-level walks within 20 minutes drive of the house with our 3-year-old (she's not ready for the Munros yet...). Highly recommended as a base for a family holiday for Torridon and the Applecross peninsula.
