The details

Set amid rolling hills, wildflower meadows and ancient oak woodland, Ritty Farmhouse is a peaceful two-bedroom retreat that perfectly balances traditional farmhouse charm with relaxed modern comfort. It’s the kind of place where time slows down – where you can watch the sun dip behind the mountains from the swing chair, wander through acres of private farmland, or cosy up by the woodburner after a day exploring the countryside.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a warm, welcoming living room filled with natural light, original artworks and deep, comfortable sofas gathered around a crackling fire. A separate snug with TV and good films on hand makes a great space to unwind or can double as an extra sleeping area if needed. The kitchen-diner is homely and well equipped – think solid wood furniture, electric cooker, dishwasher, washing machine and even a DAB radio and Bluetooth speaker for evening cooking sessions with music and wine.

Upstairs, two beautifully furnished bedrooms await. The master features a king size bed and ensuite loo, while the twin room can be arranged as a super-king for extra comfort. Downstairs, you’ll find a large family bathroom with bathtub, separate shower and plenty of space for relaxed morning routines.

Outside, the garden is a dream for nature lovers. Step through the kitchen door to a paved dining area with a stone-built BBQ and generous outdoor seating, ideal for long alfresco suppers in summer. Beyond lies a meadow and pockets of woodland, all yours to roam. You’ll find hidden swing chairs, benches positioned for sunset views, and even a brook for a refreshing dip if you’re feeling brave.

And when you’re ready to explore, the surrounding area offers an abundance of scenic walks, market towns, waterfalls and cosy village pubs. Step outside Ritty Farmhouse and follow footpaths in every direction, leading to easy rambles with sweeping views of the Black Mountains. Hike The Cats Back or Hay Bluff, explore Hay-on-Wye’s bookshops or enjoy wild swimming and paddling along the River Wye. Scenic cycling routes and electric bike deliveries make exploring effortless. Nearby, dine at The Bridge Inn, Under the Nut Tree, or The Bulls Head and discover farm-fresh produce at Chapel House Farm and Hopes of Longtown.

My family and I stayed at the Ritty Farmhouse over the new year period and we had a fantastic time. The setting is incredible — all you can hear is the river and birdsong, and at night, there are only a handful of house lights visible across the whole landscape. It’s stunning. And yet, despite its very rural location, beautiful Hay-on-Wye is only a 25-minute drive away. *Walk* for about 25 minutes (across fields and down an ancient green lane) and you’ll find yourself at The Bridge Inn — one of the nicest pubs I’ve been to in recent memory. The cottage itself is cosy and welcoming, with all the charms of an old farmhouse. We especially enjoyed the fireplace at night, and the kids loved the swing that looks out across the hillside. Can’t recommend this place enough!
