The details

Steeped in heritage and wrapped in rolling Derbyshire countryside, this spacious Victorian country house offers a grand yet welcoming escape right on the cusp of the Peak District, moments from Chatsworth House. With its sweeping driveway, handsome red-brick facade and beautifully landscaped gardens, The Red House sets the scene for unforgettable gatherings. Inside, original period details blend effortlessly with modern comforts, giving you all the charm of a historic home with the ease of contemporary living.

Sleeping up to 30 guests across 13 individually designed bedrooms, the house has space for everyone to gather and unwind in style. Wander through elegant reception rooms flooded with natural light, pause in the garden room with its French doors to the terrace or sink into deep sofas in the vast drawing room – once the ballroom – where large windows, a glowing log burner and plentiful seating create the perfect spot to come together.

At the heart of the house lies the impressive open plan kitchen and dining space, cleverly integrating the former Coach House. Floor-to-ceiling glass brings the outside in, while a central island, three ovens and generous storage make cooking for a crowd effortless. Early risers can slip into the informal dining area for a quiet coffee, while evenings unfold around the long dining tables in the formal dining room, framed by an ornate Hopton stone fireplace and views over the gardens.

Bedrooms are spread across the ground and first floor, each with its own personality and either an ensuite or private bathroom. Flexible super-king size zip-and-link beds mean rooms can be set up for couples or friends, while two family rooms include bunk beds for children or extra guests. Warm fabrics, soft colours and touches of original fireplaces create a restful and homely feel throughout.

When it’s time for play, the superb games room has something for everyone – pool, table tennis, table football, a piano, TV area and direct access to the cobbled courtyard. Outside, the gardens are a delight to explore, with a terrace for alfresco feasts, a formal parterre, sweeping lawns and countryside views.

With Bakewell and Matlock close by and Chatsworth House just a short drive away, you’re perfectly placed for Peak District walks, market-town mooching, stately home tours and cosy pub stops.
