Perched atop the craggy rocks of this ancient landscape sits a property that astounds as much as it puts at ease. Vega Island Hideaway sits on Norway's Vega Island, itself part of a series of 6,500 islands occupied since the Stone Age and boasting the status of "UNESCO World Heritage Site". The cabin sleeps up to six guests across three bedrooms - or seven, if you request a child's travel cot. Not far from the artic circle, this is a stay that is for those who seek the stillness and tranquillity of northern life. And if you're lucky, in the winter months you may sit under the aurora borealis.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional "naust" boathouses found throughout Norway's fishing villages, the exterior of the house blends seamlessly into the island terrain. The interior is of a bright and neutral pallet, directly referencing both traditional and modern Scandinavian designs. Picture windows are found throughout, from which you can survey the stunning and rugged scenery beyond. Comprised of two levels, the ground floor houses an open planned living area which includes a cosy sitting room, beautifully designed kitchen, and a dining table. This is all orientated around the stone fireplace, creating the house's main focal point. Ascend to the upper level to access the two double bedrooms and bathroom - containing a shower, sink, and toilet. The vaulted ceilinged attic also houses another small double bedroom. Step outside and onto the terrace, where you can survey the gorgeous vistas while enjoying a night cap with your loved ones.
While Vega is not the busiest the whole year round, it is most popular in July and August. Everything is open and the weather is milder from May to September, while Autumn brings amazing sea storms. December and January are snowy and the island tends to close down, but if you stock up then you may be lucky enough to witness the world famous Northern Lights. Fishing is the main source of industry on the island, and we recommend that visitors cast a line, too. Well worth a hike is Trollvasstinden, the island's highest mountain. In the spring, Vega is wonderful for birdwatching, while in the summer the stillness of the water lends itself perfect to a kayak - or snorkel - in the coastal waters. 20-minutes away in Viksås, Vega Havhotell is run by the award-winning chef Jon Aga.
