The details

A little piece of old-time Americana hidden away in the Cotswolds’ woodlands, the Gold Rush Cabin transports you to another place and another era. This octagonal wooden cabin feels pleasingly rough and ready, but keeps things comfortable where it counts – ideal for two hopeful adventurers heading west.

Kept warm and cosy by an antique wood-burning stove, the cabin features furnishings inspired by tales of the gold rush days, a pair of cow-hide chairs and a giant sheepskin rug among them. A large and supremely comfortable double bed sits in the centre of it all, with a few little oddments scattered around the place for good measure.

The main living space leads out onto the deck, where you will find your camp kitchen. There’s a cast-iron gas burner and barbecue, a cold box and a fire pit just outside for those beans-around-the-campfire moments as night falls. A sink and plenty of kitchen bits and pieces are provided, and an outdoor seating area with table and chairs is a delightful spot to enjoy a drink or simple meal.

The American red cedar wood hot tub sits a few feet from the cabin - the perfect spot to soak away your stresses, as you gaze up at the clouds.

This evocative outdoor space also features a wonderful watering can shower with tin surround, which offers hot water – so it’s a little more luxurious than it sounds. Towels are provided too. A compost loo completes the picture for the bathroom facilities.

You can spend your days chilling out in the hammock, or taking your dog for walks – up to two are allowed here. The green heart of the Cotswolds really will be a treat for them.

It will take around 10 minutes to drive into Stroud, and around 17 to Cirencester – both centres of activity in the Cotswolds region. It’s not for nothing that Stroud has been called ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’. There’s a pleasingly eclectic mix of specialist shops, with books, antiques, vintage fashion and more, plus a thriving cultural and literary scene. Many writers and artists take inspiration from the stunning surroundings of the five valleys around the town.

Another market town, and the largest in the Cotswolds, Cirencester offers beautiful parks, including the Elemental Sculpture Park, theatrical productions at the Sundial, and fascinating Roman history at the Corinium Museum. If you’re looking for interesting gifts to take home, head for the Corn Hall Arcade, where stallholders have all kinds of crafts on offer. A surfeit of cafés, bistros and coffee shops make this town a great place to hang out before you return to the American West back at Gold Rush Cabin.
