The details

You’ll find Mayfly Cabin in the North Devon countryside, nestled beside a tranquil lake and shrouded by peaceful woodland. This serene location is perfect for couples or solo travellers looking to switch off, relax and reconnect with nature. You can spend your days on the lakeside veranda soaking up the surroundings, then return to the cabin in the evenings to cosy up by the log-burning stove.

A working trout farm, the lake is ideal for anglers looking to hone their fly-fishing skills and catch fresh trout, which can be cooked back at the cabin. Don’t worry if you don’t get any nibbles, freshly smoked trout and salmon can be purchased on-site (make sure to stock up on bagels and cream cheese!). The location is also home to a rich diversity of wildlife and is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Herons, kingfishers, buzzards, peregrines, deer and otters are just some of the creatures that have been sighted in the area.

The cabin blends seamlessly into its idyllic surroundings. It boasts a light and airy interior, which is beautifully furnished and well-equipped. The living space is ideal for rainy days, with comfy sofas, a TV and a selection of books and board games. Ample firewood is provided to fuel the log burner and keep the home warm throughout the year. When it’s time to eat, guests can make use of the kitchen, fitted with modern appliances and including everything you could need to cook up a feast.

Meals can be eaten inside or alfresco on the patio beside the lake. You’ll also find a BBQ here, ideal for grilling up your latest catch, and a fire pit where guests can relax under the stars. When it’s time to unwind, you can retreat back to the cabin’s queen size bed for a long and uninterrupted sleep. A stylish bathroom with a walk-in shower completes the property.

The site is in an incredible location, between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most of it is open to be explored by guests, with a selection of lovely walks by the lake and in the surrounding woodland. You’ll be pleased to know there are some great pubs and eateries nearby. They include Broom Hill Hotel & Sculpture Gardens, (a one-mile walk through the woods) which has a delicious menu showcasing seasonal, local ingredients. Muddiford Inn and Pyne Arms are two excellent country pubs that are both a short drive away. Further afield is Devon’s glorious coastline. Gorgeous beaches at Woolacombe, Morthoe and Ilfracombe are all within easy reach.

This is by far one of the most idyllic and beautiful places me and my partner have stayed! This cabin not only boasts stunning views on your doorstep but also everything you need for a cosy night in by the lake. Richard the owner was particularly great and held a tuition for my partner to catch a trout which from start to finish was amazing! The lakes are well kept and perfect for a keen fly fisherman . Will definitely be coming back here for sure! 10/10 for everything!
