The details

The Brecon Beacons are wild and they are cherished for it and in the northwest corner of the National Park around The Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du) there is possibly the wildest landscape of them all. It’s a Dark Sky Reserve and part of the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark, sculpted by the last ice age into a place of hidden lakes and rugged mountains.

In the middle of all this natural beauty is Nantseren, where a group of up to 16 will have four canvas homes and some funky communal spaces all to yourselves. There’s a hammock down by the stream, fabulous hiking and biking, wild swimming in plunge pools and waterfalls hidden in the hills and the legendary Llyn y Fan Fach, plus the private hot tub and the firepit where you can gather round at night and recount the day’s adventures. Owners Ceri and Rebecca can point out the area’s best trails, or arrange outdoor activities and yoga sessions. They also keep the daily farm schedule on a blackboard, so you can join in with feeding lambs or moving sheep.

Ceri is of the third generation to farm at Nantseren and his passion for preserving the land is evident everywhere. Lighting has been carefully considered to leave the stunning skies clear and the tents are off grid, while there is power in the barn and sensor lights on the loos and showers, so you won’t be fumbling for switches.

There are three lodge tents which sleep four each in a double and two singles, plus a bell tent with the same beds. They are arranged along the stream in a quiet meadow, roughly 100-200m from the barn and the parking area. There are fire pits near the tents meaning you can stay toasty under the stars.

There's a kitchen in the barn, charge points and WiFi, plenty of seating for everyone, and games from cards to table tennis. There's also a shower room and toilet for each tent. There are no walkable pubs or shops (depending on how much you like a hike of course) so stock up in Brecon on the way down, then settle into your own private, natural playground, for a few days of peace in a stunning and starlit wilderness.

Nantseren was booked as a surprise for my wife and all of the children in our group, Rebecca and Ceri made every step so easy, even with my weird and wonderful requests. When we arrived the communal barn was spotless and welcoming with a brilliant kitchen and our own toilet which was surprisingly warm and very clean. The wild spa area was so comfortable and relaxing, even with some sheep peeping through the hedges, which added to the amazing atmosphere. The tent was so warm and the beds really comfortable. Nothing was to much trouble for our amazing hosts and we was given advice on locations to visit and also shops that we could get to quickly. Thank you so much everyone at Nantseren.
