The details

Tucked within a thoughtfully restored former agricultural building, The Cowshed is a spacious and characterful retreat that blends industrial loft style with contemporary comfort and strong eco credentials. From the outside it retains its rural heritage, but step inside and you’ll find a warm, design-led space that feels calm, creative and effortlessly inviting.

Sleeping six to eight guests, this is a brilliant option for families or groups of friends. There are three private bedrooms, two featuring generous king size beds dressed for long, restful nights. The third bedroom is a standout space, fitted with bespoke built-in timber bunk beds accessed by a scaffold-style ladder, creating a fun yet beautifully crafted sleeping area. Two additional single pull-out beds can be added in the bunk room, offering flexibility for larger groups.

The interiors strike a confident balance between raw and refined. Polished concrete floors run throughout, paired with sustainable maple plywood cladding that wraps the walls and roof, softening the industrial edge with natural warmth. At the heart of the home sits the eclectic lilac kitchen, complete with integrated appliances and sleek stainless-steel worktops. It’s a sociable, design-forward space that works just as well for cooking together as it does for lingering conversations over coffee. A relaxed living and dining area flows alongside, with designer furniture chosen to complement the clean, contemporary feel.

Comfort is carefully considered throughout. A full bathroom with bath and shower and a separate shower room are finished in bold, full-height coloured tiles, adding personality and a playful hit of colour. Sustainable systems including an air source heat pump, triple glazing and an MVHR system ensure the space stays warm, quiet and filled with fresh, filtered air all year round.

Outside, life spills naturally onto the terrace, where seating, a gas BBQ and external sink make alfresco dining easy. There’s also a conservatory for slower mornings and a wood-fired hot tub for long, star-filled evenings. Guests can wander the wider landscaped grounds, dip into the natural swimming pond and explore meandering paths through wildflower meadows.

The surrounding countryside encourages a slower pace, with open views, nature-rich walks and nearby towns and coastlines within easy reach, making The Cowshed a restorative base for both relaxed stays and gentle adventures

Rural East Sussex is a patchwork of rolling hills, ancient woodland and quietly spectacular coastline. Spend days wandering sunken lanes and chalk paths, stopping at vineyards and farm shops, or head to the sea for clifftop walks along the Seven Sisters and swims off shingly beaches. Historic villages, medieval castles and atmospheric ruins lie just beyond the hedgerows, while evenings are best finished in candlelit pubs and tucked-away restaurants. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and linger.
